What Should Your Child Wear to Their First Gymnastics Class? (Plus FAQs)
Signing your child up for their very first gymnastics class is an exciting milestone! You’re giving them a chance to burn off energy, make new friends, and build a great physical foundation. But as the first day approaches, it's completely normal for parents to hit a wave of logistical panic.
What do they wear? Do I need to buy a leotard right away? What goes in their bag? Can I sit and watch?
We want your child's first day at Salto Gymnastics Academy to be completely stress-free. To help you prepare, we’ve put together the ultimate beginner’s guide on what to wear, what to pack, and what to expect when you arrive at our facility in Bengaluru.
🎒 First Day Checklist
Clothing: Form-fitting athletic clothes or a simple leotard. No zippers or buttons.
Feet: Completely bare feet (no shoes, no socks).
Hair & Accessories: Hair tied back securely; all jewelry left at home.
The Bag: A water bottle labeled with their name and a small, neat snack.

The Apparel Blueprint: Clothing Do’s and Don'ts
When looking at what to wear to gymnastics, the golden rule is simple: Safety and freedom of movement. Gymnasts spend a lot of time upside down, rolling, and swinging. Loose clothes can flip over their faces or get tangled in the equipment.
The Do's:
Option A: The Leotard. A standard, one-piece gymnastics leotard is perfect. It hugs the body securely so coaches can easily spot your child safely.
Option B: Athletic Top & Bottoms. If you don't have a leotard yet, don't worry! A snug-fitting t-shirt or tank top tucked into athletic shorts or leggings works wonderfully for kids gymnastics classes in Bengaluru
Bare Feet: Children must go onto the floor with bare feet. Socks are incredibly slippery on the wooden beams and vinyl mats, making them a safety hazard.
Hair Tied Up: Long hair must be pulled back securely into a ponytail, braid, or bun. Loose hair can block their vision mid-skill or get stepped on during rolls.
The Don'ts:
No Hoodies or Loose Clothes: Oversized shirts or baggy sweatpants sag and cause tripping hazards.
No Buttons, Zippers, or Snaps: These can scratch the vinyl on the mats or, worse, pinch your child's skin while they roll.
No Jewelry: Earrings (except small studs), necklaces, and bracelets must be taken off before class to prevent them from catching on the equipment or a coach's hand.
What to Pack in Their Gym Bag
Your child doesn’t need much beginner gymnastics gear to get started, but a small gym bag with these two items will keep them comfortable:
A Labeled Water Bottle: Gymnastics is a full-body workout! They will get frequent water breaks throughout the hour, so send them with a spill-proof bottle.
A Light, Mess-Free Snack: If your child is coming straight from school or preschool, a small snack (like a banana, a granola bar, or string cheese) is great for an energy boost before or immediately after class. Please avoid nuts to keep our facility safe for kids with allergies.
Frequently Asked Questions from First-Time Parents
Can parents stay and watch the class?
Absolutely! We love welcoming families to Salto. Our facility features a dedicated, comfortable viewing area where parents can sit, relax, and watch their children progress. We just ask that parents stay in the viewing zone so the gym floor remains clear and distraction-free for the coaches and athletes.
What is your facility's safety protocol?
Safety is embedded into everything we do. Our entire facility is outfitted with competitive-grade, impact-absorbing mats, scaled-down equipment for smaller hands, and strict cleaning schedules. Furthermore, all of our coaches are fully certified, background-checked, and highly trained in safe skill progressions—meaning your child will never attempt a skill before they are physically and mentally ready.
See You on the Mat!
The hardest part of starting gymnastics is simply walking through the front door for the first time. Once your child takes their bare feet onto our mats, our high-energy coaching staff will guide them through every jump, roll, and smile.
